Spider-Man: Homecoming - All The Rumors Debunked

As with any heavily anticipated film, there were numerous rumors and possibilities for Spider-Man: Homecoming leading up to release. That said, a portion of those turned out to be false, and here are some of the ones that missed the mark.

Spoilers incoming for Spider-Man: Homecoming, so if you haven't had a chance to see the movie you've been warned.

Among the most interesting rumors (collected by ScreenCrush) was that Dylan O'Brien was going to be Spider-Man, though of course, the role ended up going to Tom Holland.

The title of the film was also hotly contested, with the studio finally landing on Homecoming.

"The series will be called 'Spectacular' Spider-Man," — Latino Review [via io9]

Since this is the first in a series of Spider-Man films, many predicted several other characters would make cameos. While that did turn out to be true, it wasn't any of the ones mentioned below.

"Could Kraven the Hunter be the villain in the Spider-Man standalone film?" — Heroic Hollywood

"There's still a chance for the Black Cat to bounce back with one of her nine lives in Spider-Man: Homecoming." — Moviepilot

Gwen Stacy CONFIRMED for Spider-Man: Homecoming." — Comic Book Cast

"It sounds like that Captain America: Civil War reunion might extend to Scarlett Johansson." — Comic Book Movie

"Marvel Studios is considering having Vincent D'Onofrio reprise his Wilson Fisk role from Daredevil in Spider-Man: Homecoming." — ScreenGeek

"Marvel casts Michael Barbieri as Ganke in Spider-Man: Homecoming." — Inverse

"Will Marvel's Nightwatch appear In Sony's Spider-Man: Homecoming movie?" — Bleeding Cool

"Tyne Daly will be playing a female J. Jonah Jameson." — Melty

"Tom Holland's Spidey might have [an] interlocking storyline with the other heroes on the same timeline especially with the MCU characters on Netflix such as Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage who are also located in New York." — Yibada

"The official Better Call Saul Twitter account strongly hinted that [Michael] Mando is playing Cletus Kasady, the demented and violent felon that becomes Carnage." — Comic Book Movie

"'There will be a surprise appearance from a character that is central to the Spider-Man mythos, one who will play a larger role in upcoming films. We just can't confirm who it is at this time.' They don't know who that will be, but mention Norman Osborn and Eddie Brock as possible candidates." — Schmoes Know [via Comic Book Movie]

Now that last one and the one before it are probably tied together, as there is a longtime Spider-Man villain who makes an appearance, but it is neither Carnage, Venom, or Norman Osborn.

At one point it was thought that Iron Man might fight Spider-Man, but again, this did not make it into the movie in any way.

"An inside source says that a 'major part' of the first Spectacular Spider-Man movie 'will involve Spider- Man fighting Iron Man and then trying to pass the 'audition' to join the Avengers.' The Sinister Six will be coming together throughout that movie and might only become a fully-fledged supervillain team by the end of the film."— Latino Review [via io9]

One of the more in-depth ones included this scene at a Homecoming Dance. While the Homecoming Dance does figure into the movie, the dance itself plays second fiddle to some amazing character moments, and none of those include Aunt May or Mary Jane.

"Peter learns Midtown High is holding a second Homecoming Dance, thanks to the donation of an anonymous benefactor. Peter is tired and decides he wants nothing to do with it, especially after blowing his chances with Liz. Aunt May reveals she's already arranged a date for him to go with, someone she's been trying to set him up with for the entire film. Mary Jane is waiting at the door with her famous 'Face it Tiger, you just hit the the jackpot.'" — Comic Book Movie

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Spider-Man: Homecoming are both in theaters now, followed by Thor: Ragnarok on November 3, 2017. After that Black Panther debuts on February 16, 2018, while Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters on May 4, 2018. Ant-Man and the Wasp is slated for July 6, 2018, followed byCaptain Marvel on March 8, 2019.
