Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man Screen Test Reveals A Much Darker Movie

The 2002 Spider-Man film was for all intents and purposes a family affair, aside from a few darker moments (the Green Goblin fight comes to mind). It turns out that wasn't always the case.

A screen test of Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker has turned up on Youtube (via THR) that shows a grittier take on the character's introduction. Maguire looks more like Bruce Lee than Peter Parker here, appearing ripped and with his shirt off as he takes on a few thugs trying to mug someone.

In addition to the added muscle, the action is far more martial arts based than the combat in the final film, with him literally throwing someone into the sky. You don't hear a thud either, so it appears he went quite a long distance.

The thugs also drop a few F-bombs, because all thugs cuss constantly right? It's an interesting look at what could have been, and you can view the full video below.

Ironically this is what some would have loved to see in the third Spider-Man film. With the symbiote slowly taking over, this more violent characterization would have been the perfect means to show Peter's evolution, but instead, fans got the quirky at best and laughable at worst "emo Peter" that provides endless meme fodder.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is in theaters now. Spider-Man: Homecominglands on July 7, 2017, followed by Thor: Ragnarok on November 3, 2017. After that Black Panther debuts on February 16, 2018, while Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters on May 4, 2018. Ant-Man and the Wasp is slated for July 6, 2018, followed by Captain Marvel on March 8, 2019.
