X-Men: Apocalypse Crushes Alice Through the Looking Glass in Box Office

Despite mediocre reviews and a busy holiday weekend, X-Men: Apocalypse emerged as the top movie at the box office this weekend, crushing Alice Through the Looking Glass. The new X-Men movie earned over $80 million over the four day Memorial Day weekend, raising its cumulative global box office earnings to over $265 million. While Fox had hoped the movie would match X-Men: Days of Future Past's Memorial Day haul of $110 million, the studio had conservatively estimated the movie would bring in $85 million on opening weekend.
While Apocalypse slightly underperformed when compared to its predecessor, Alice Through the Looking Glass came nowhere near the strong opening weekend of the first Alice movie. Alice 2 only earned $34.2 million over the four day weekend, a whopping 70% less than the first Alice movie's $116 million opening weekend. The movie was released shortly after star Johnny Depp was hit with a restraining order by wife Amber Heard after she made claims of domestic violence against the actor. Through the Looking Glass fared a little better overseas with $65 million, bringing its global box office total to just under $100 million.
Coming in third place was The Angry Birds Movie and in fourth was Captain America: Civil War, which officially overtook Deadpool as the highest US grossing movie in 2016.
