Bette Midler Pushing For Hocus Pocus 2
06/25/2015 04:44 pm EDT
In 2014, Bette Midler said that she and her fellow Sanderson sisters Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy are all interested in making a sequel to 1993's Hocus Pocus. Since then, Disney has made no effort to make that a reality, but that hasn't stopped the singer from pleading her case.
The Divine Miss M is currently touring the country and during her Phoenix, Arizona concert she sang 'I Put a Spell On You,' dressed as Winifred, just like she did in the film. At one point, Midler shouts, "I'm ready for my sequel, Mr. Disney!"
Does Hocus Pocus deserve a sequel? The production budget was $28M and it grossed $39.5M. If we factor in marketing costs the film may have only broken even. But, that's not the whole story. The film had done tremendously well on television and through DVD sales. 2.8 million viewers tuned in for a 2011 broadcast and it brings in $1M a year in DVD sales each October.
Personally, those numbers do indicate that a sequel is warranted, but as a TV movie not a feature film. Funny enough, Hocus Pocus was first conceived as a TV movie.
