Deadpool is now the highest grossing R-rated movie of all time at the worldwide box office.
Fox's superhero action-comedy now had a worldwide box office total of nearly $746 million. That puts it ahead of the movie previously at the top of the chart, The Matrix Reloaded, which grossed $742.1 million worldwide.
Domestically, Deadpool is still only the third highest grossing R-rated movie, with $349.5 million, just behind American Sniper in second with #350.1 million. However, Deadpool is still playing in theaters, so there's a good chance it will overtake American Sniper by the end of its run.
Based upon Marvel Comics' most unconventional anti-hero, Deadpool tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.
Deadpool is directed by Tim Miller, with a screenplay by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, and stars Ryan Reynolds, Morena Baccarin, Ed Skrein, T. J. Miller, Gina Carano, Brianna Hildebrand, Stefan Kapičić, and Leslie Uggams.
