The Fate Of The Furious Plane Rescue Almost Ended Very Differently [SPOILERS]

Oh, how ridiculous is the Fast and the Furious series? Let us count the ways…

It seems like it was just the last movie when Jason Statham's Deckard Shaw was terrorizing the family in a plot of revenge for what they did to his brother Owen, which seems like just two movies ago when Luke Evans' character was terrorizing the crew for… reasons?

And somewhere between all that Statham created a time loop and murdered Han in Tokyo Drift. Well, the construct IS a flat circle, so it's not out of the realm of the reality established in the former car racing series…

There are a lot of ridiculous scenes, characters, dialogue exchanges, and plot points throughout the eight Fast & Furious franchise films, but one scene from The Fate Of The Furious almost veered to leap the proverbial shark.

OK, here we go.

After being forgiven for murdering their beloved friend and being made part of the team, Deckard and his brother (surprise!) Owen decided to help Hobbs, Dom, and their makeshift family rescue Dom's actual family in the fight against Cipher.

See, the bad girl (Charlize Theron) kidnapped Dom's secret baby boy (no, not Tyrese) with Elena and was holding him captive on a plane. It's also revealed that Cipher coerced a lot of the bad guys from the last few films into going against the crew.

So Deckard and Owen help out and get some revenge against their blackmailer by raiding the plane—in the air—and getting the baby back. It's all pretty insane, but a high-octane action scene that's par for the course in the series. And, according to screenwriter Chris Morgan, it almost got even crazier.

He told Slash Film that there was a version of the movie where Deckard escapes the plane mid-air with the baby using what else but a damn car.

Yes, so here was an early version we had, and ultimately we decided not to go with it, but to show you're on the right track. So Deckard Shaw arrives on the plane the exact same way, but he has a pack with him and we don't know what it is. And he gets the baby and fights his way out, and the end of that sequence is, he opens the duffel bag he's been carrying, and there's a baby seat in it. A car seat. And in the back of the plane is Dom's car that you see him load up into the plane earlier in the film. So he straps that kid in, gets in, and rolls it out the back, and they do the car going out like we did in Furious 7, but he's got the baby in it, and the baby is laughing the whole way. So that was something we considered. We had a version of that at one point.

Honestly, we're not quite sure why they didn't do it. If fear of repeating themselves is what stopped them, why does nearly every car race in the series go down the exact same way? It's all just a bunch of grimacing and downshifting and crashes and gas-pedal smashing.

If you're going to go all out in these movies, the least you could do is strap that baby to the hood and hope for the best.

In addition to Theron, the series welcomes newcomers Scott Eastwood and Oscar winner Helen Mirren. The film is directed by F. Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton) and produced by returning producers Neal H. Moritz, Michael Fottrell and Diesel.
