Fox Reportedly Moving Forward With Fantastic Four 2 Despite Box Office

There was nothing fantastic about this past weekend for 20th Century Fox and their latest superhero film, Josh Trank's Fantastic Four. Now the studio will have to figure out where to go from here. Do they reboot Fantastic Four yet again or sell the rights back to Marvel or move forward with a sequel — scheduled for June 9, 2017 — despite getting clobbered at the box office?
"Everything I've heard would indicate that the studio will move forward with a Fantastic Four sequel," Drew McWeeny of HitFix reports. "It may not make that original 2017 date, but they're definitely planning to make it."
During this mess, sources from everywhere have been crawling out of the woodwork to provide details on what went wrong between the director and the studio. Trank claimed in his now-infamous tweet that he had a "fantastic" film at one time, but McWeeny heard much differently. "He may claim that his cut a year ago was amazing, but that opinion was not shared by the majority of the people working on the film," McWeeny wrote. "There were internal conversations at that point about potentially scrapping everything. That's how strong the concerns were."
A contemporary re-imagining of Marvel's original and longest-running superhero team, centers on four young outsiders who teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways. Their lives irrevocably upended, the team must learn to harness their daunting new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy.
Fantastic Four hits theaters on August 7. You can see where its sequel, and other upcoming comic book movies, will fall here.
