Watch Tom Cruise Transform In New The Mummy Teaser

04/03/2017 02:18 pm EDT

Sunday morning, Universal released a brand new trailer for The Mummy. The Tom Cruise-starring film is set to kick off the connected Monster Universe.

The trailer was more epic than anyone expected, but it wasn't the only new footage fans were treated to this weekend. Around the time of The Walking Dead season seven finale, Universal debuted a minute-long teaser as well.

This new promo featured Russell Crowe more than most of the former trailers have. His character Dr. Henry Jekyll will help connect the different movies in the universe, and he explains his role a bit in this teaser.

The most exciting part of this footage is watching Tom Cruise show physical signs of his contact with the Mummy. It has become evident that his character was resurrected by the power of the Mummy, and that he gained some power from her. However, this is the time when Cruise's transformations come to life.

As the trailer ends, Cruise's eye split open just as the Mummy's eyes did in the first trailer.

From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.

Cruise is joined by a cast including Annabelle Wallis (upcoming King Arthur, television's Peaky Blinders), Jake Johnson (Jurassic World), Courtney B. Vance (TV's American Crime Story: The People V. O.J. Simpson) and Oscar® winner Russell Crowe (Gladiator).

The creative team on this action-adventure event is led by director/producer Alex Kurtzman and producer Chris Morgan, who have been instrumental in growing some of the most successful franchises of the past several years—with Kurtzman writing or producing entries in the Transformers, Star Trek, and Mission: Impossible series, and Morgan being the narrative engineer of the Fast & Furious saga as it has experienced explosive growth from its third chapter on. Sean Daniel, who produced the most recent Mummy trilogy, produces alongside Kurtzman and Morgan.

The Mummy opens in theaters June 9, 2017.
