New 'Star Trek: Discovery' Promo Comes In Peace

Star Trek: Discovery wants you to know that it comes in peace.

The CBS All Access series has released a new promo that features lead character First Officer Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) delivering a monologue preaching the tenants of the Federation of Planets and the Mission of Starfleet.

The voiceover says:

"We come from a tradition of tolerance, freedom, and justice; from a legacy of fearless exploration, of allies who respect each other's differences, honor, and civilizations. We come on a mission to understand our world and ourselves better. We come in peace."

Starfleet may come in peace, but Burnham will be instrumental in starting a war with the Klingon Empire that will serve as the plot for the first season of Star Trek: Discovery, though not its presumed second season, which will not feature any of the traditionally serialized standalone episodes that Star Trek was known. Instead, it will be more like Game of Thrones, telling one long-form story.

The Klingons already played a major role in shaping the life of Burnham. A Klingon attack on Vulcan turned Burnham into an orphan. That event left Sarek, the father of Spock, feeling responsible for the child and so he adopted her and raised her as his own.

The Klingons will be represented primarily by House T'Kuvma, a House whose leader seems intent on uniting all of Klingon houses, though to what end remains unclear. His forces include the fierce warrior Kol.

Set 10 years prior to the five-year mission of the Enterprise in Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: Discovery follows the adventures of Starfleet on their missions to discover new worlds and new lifeforms, and one Starfleet officer who must learn that to truly understand all things alien, you must first understand yourself. The series will feature a new ship, new characters, and new missions while embracing the same ideology and hope for the future that inspired a generation of dreamers and doers.

Star Trek: Discovery will debut on Sept. 24.
