Star Trek: The Next Generation: Mirror Broken Introduces Mirror Universe Riker

Last week, IDW Publishing released the second issue of Star Trek: The Next Generation: Mirror Broken, the miniseries examining what the crew of Star Trek: The Next Generation is like in Star Trek's infamous mirror universe. While much of the Mirror Universe Star Trek: The Next Generation cast was introduced in the series' first issue or Free Comic Book Day sampler, it was only in issue number two did fans meet the Mirror Universe version of Captain Picard's "Number One," William T. Riker.

In the prime universe, William Riker was the first officer aboard the Enterprise under the command of Captain Jean-Luc Picard throughout seven seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation. In the Mirror Universe, Riker is...still the first officer on the Enterprise.

The key difference here is that the Enterprise in the Mirror Universe is not the grand flagship of Starfleet as seen in Star Trek: The Next Generation. Instead, Star Trek: The Next Generation: Mirror Broken, which is written by Scott and David Tipton with art by J.K. Woodward, reveals that the Enterprise is a top-secret project being developed as a last-ditch effort to restore the all but fallen Terran Empire to its former glory and is under the command of Captain Edward Jellico (who appeared in the Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 6 two-parter "Chain of Command").

In Mirror Broken, Captain Jean-Luc Picard, who is currently in command of the aging Terran Empire starship Stargazer, catches wind of the existence of the Enterprise and he decides that he is the only man suitable to command so fine a ship that it brings all hope for the Terran Empire with it. To achieve his goal of taking the Enterprise for himself he first seeks out Geordi La Forge, who worked on the Enterprise.

For the next part of Picard's plan, he needs the assistance of the Enterprise's first officer. Luckily for him, some things remain constant across timelines and the Enterprise's first officer William Riker had a previous romantic relationship with the Stargazer's Inquisitor Deanna Troi, who uses her history with Riker to set up a meeting.

Riker isn't happy when it's Picard who comes looking for him at the agreed upon meeting place instead of Troi. The two end up in a barroom brawl that goes on for several pages. Despite the initial animosity, by the end of the fight, they've each earned the other's respect. Having created that bond, it's now time for Picard and Riker to make a play for control of the Enterprise.
