Rey's First Meeting With Luke Doesn't Go Well In The Last Jedi

Rey grew up on the desert planet of Jakku hearing legends about the Jedi warrior known as Luke Skywalker. When she finally comes face to face with the man she thought was a myth on the isolated planet of Ahch-To, it goes without saying that her expectations are high.

Well, someone should have told her to never meet your heroes.

EW's feature on Star Wars: The Last Jedi hints that Rey's first meeting with Luke doesn't go as well as she anticipated, and definitely not like when Luke went in search of Ben Kenobi and found a warm, guiding mentor.

"She's so hopeful to everything," star Daisy Ridley said. "And obviously there's a hint of, 'What the hell?'"

That rejection has an impact on Rey, who is already dealing with being abandoned on a trash planet as a child.

"Regardless of everything else, she's been welcomed," Ridley said of the character's whirlwind journey in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. "No one ever really turns away from her."

But when she arrives on the ancient Jedi planet to bring Luke back into the fight against the First Order and his evil nephew Kylo Ren, she's met with the hermit's own Resistance. Ridley said that Rey has some lofty expectations when it comes to Skywalker, and he himself is dealing with his own issues of guilt in the movie.

"I don't think one girl, who he doesn't know, turning up with a lightsaber is gonna make him go, 'Oh, s**t, yeah, of course I'll get back into the action,'" Ridley said.

"But does he not know her?" Mark Hamill said later on, hinting at her tragic and mysterious past.

What role does Luke have to play in her history? And why exactly is he in isolation when he knows the galaxy desperately needs his help?

We'll learn the answers to these questions when Star Wars: The Last Jedi premieres in theaters December 15th.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is the second film in the new Star Wars sequel trilogy that began with Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015. The film will deal with Luke training Rey to become a, and possibly the last, Jedi. Meanwhile, the Resistance, including Poe Dameron and First Order defector Finn, continues to fight against the First Order, led by General Hux, while Supreme Leader Snoke and his Dark Side follower Kylo Ren continue their mysterious plot.
