"'Attack on Titan' became an instant hit since it first streamed in 2013 and we are thrilled to bring fans the long-awaited Season 2 of the series," said Gen Fukunaga, CEO and founder of Funimation. "'Attack on Titan' is truly a worldwide phenomenon that has continued to grow at a non-stop pace. Fans can look forward to an exciting second season."

If you are a fan of Attack on Titan, then you have been no doubt keeping track of the delays plaguing Season 2. The confirmation was made back in November 2014, and plans at that time estimated the new season to debut in 2016. Clearly, those plans did not pan out as expect, leaving fans to revisit the original Attack on Titan episodes in a fit of nostalgic desperation.

Since Attack on Titan's first season ended, the series has become an international hit amongst audiences. The first 25-episode season debuted in 2013 and can be streamed online at sights like Hulu. As fans waited for a second season to come around, Attack on Titan has been busy expanding itself into a full-on franchise. The manga has since been adapted into various side manga series, light novels, and even live-action films. In Japan, the first of two films based on the post-apocalyptic series debuted in July 2015 with the second following in September.

"'Attack on Titan' is one of those rare titles that has reached true cult status with anime fans," said Mike DuBoise, EVP and COO of Funimation. "It's been more than 3 years since the last episode of 'Attack on Titan' Season 1 and passion from its fans has not waned. We look forward to premiering it on FunimationNow"

Funimation's announcement reiterated that Attack on Titan Season 2 would return in April 2017. The series will debut in Japan at that time, and there is no word yet whether a simulcast of the show will be done. However, fans have hope that Funimation will make it happen. When Attack on Titan debuted back in 2013, Crunchyroll provided a simulcast for the series with English subtitles, and Funimation announced earlier this year it was partnering with the popular streaming site to bring more anime to even more fans. The studio may work with Crunchyroll to bring a English sub and dub to their respective sites once Season 2 gets underway.

So, are you excited to hear that Funimation has already acquired rights to Attack on Titan Season 2? Are you expecting an English simulcast to come out of the announcement? Let us know in the comments below!
