How New Avengers Project Games Will Fit Into The Marvel Universe

Marvel rocked the world this morning with the announcement that they were partnering with Square Enix - creators of Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts - on a new series of Avengers games.

The studios released a teaser video with the announcement, which saw a very broken and battered Avengers team. This is something that comic fans may not be used to, but the footage promises some epic storytelling.

You may find yourself wondering, "How will this story fit into the current Marvel landscape?"

Fortunately, the game developers explained just how they plan to make that possible.

In the press release from Square Enix, it was revealed that the games would have a "completely original story." Much like Injustice did for DC Comics, the Avengers games will find be completely different from any comic or movie stories we've seen in the past.

That quote alone makes it seem like the games will stand alone, completely separate from the current Marvel universes.

According to the developers, that's not at all the case. The new games will find new ways to weave in and out of the existing Marvel landscape.

Jay Ong, Senior Vice President, Games & Innovation, Marvel Entertainment, had this to say about the game's inclusion in current Marvel properties:

"The Avengers project is a perfect example of how Marvel is making games a key part of the landscape for Marvel storytelling, alongside comics, television and film. We can only do this by matching our greatest Super Heroes with the world's top developers, such as the creative minds at Square Enix."

After DC fans fell in love with the Injustice storyline, the company began creating an entire comic line based around the idea. These new books tied into the game's plot, and gave fans more information on the tale.

It seems like Marvel could do the same with this new game series, using the project as a platform for new comics in the future.
