According to Deadline, Idris Elba (Pacific Rim, Luther) is the frontrunner to land the starring role of Roland Deschain in the film adaptation of Stephen King's seminal work The Dark Tower series.
It will be directed by Nikolaj Arcel (A Royal Affair). Matthew McConaughey is still in negotiations with Sony Pictures and Media Rights Capital to play the villainous Walter Padick, aka the Man in Black.
The Dark Tower is expected to be the first of a series of films based on the book series. Deadline adds, "First installment of The Dark Tower focuses on the first book in the series, The Gunslinger, establishing the relationship between Roland and young protege Jake Chambers."
The Dark Tower series tells the story of Roland Deschain, Mid-World's last gunslinger, who is traveling southeast across Mid-World's post-apocalyptic landscape, searching for the powerful but elusive magical edifice known as The Dark Tower. Located in the fey region of End-World, amid a sea of singing red roses, the Dark Tower is the nexus point of the time-space continuum. It is the heart of all worlds, but it is also under threat. Someone, or something, is using the evil technology of the Great Old Ones to destroy it. - stephenking.com
The Dark Tower is scheduled to open in theaters January 13, 2017.
