Artist Who Knows Nothing About Pokemon Doodles Dozens Of Them On Reddit

In a world dominated by Pokemon, it can be hard to escape the pocket monsters. The franchise's popularity has only grown with Pokemon GO, leaving those who are unfamiliar with it scratching their heads. As such, some have tried to educate themselves on all things Pokemon. As for others, they've given the app a go to see what the fuss is about. But, for one online artist, it looks like they're embracing their inexperience and turning it into one amazing art project.

Reddit user netwoodle has taken their unfamiliarity with Pokemon and used it to create blind doodles of the franchise's creatures. Posting to r/ICanDrawThat, netwoodle - who's real name is Sam - created a thread where he drew Pokemon for fans. It didn't take long for users to flood the post with their requests. Clearly, Sam's offer to doodle Pokemon despite knowing nothing about them was too great to pass up.

Even Ash Ketchum would agree the artist made good on his promise. Sam rolled out over a dozen doodles, leaving Reddit users stunned and amused. Just take a look at his version of Dragonite, and you'll see just why Sam's drawings got such a reaction. The caricature looks nothing like its 'real-life' double, but fans couldn't care less. Sam's doodle features a four-legged dragon breathing fire from his gaping mouth. And, most interestingly, a stick of dynamite has replaced Dragonite's usually long, graceful tail. After all, what else would you expect from a creature called Dragonite? The name is eerily close to dynamite, so maybe it'd be better if the actual Dragonite sported a bombastic style like its alter-ego.

After reaching out to Sam about his work, the artist told me he only "spent between five and fifteen minutes each on this set." And, when asked why he chose Pokemon of all things to doodle, Sam said he decided to draw them after talking to someone about Pokemon GO.

"My daughter's friend plays Pokemon Go, and I recently spent a long car ride with him discussing the critters he's caught, and I guess that was at the back of my mind when I made my offer," he said. "I just thought it would be fun to draw creatures based on the name alone, and thought Pokemon would provide some structure around the offer."

Clearly, Sam's take on the famous franchise has won over scores of Pokemon fans. Christian Hoffer, ComicBook's resident Pokemon Master, called the doodles "fun interpretations of the Pokemon concept, grounded in surrealism and humor more than anything else. The creatures are delightfully bizarre, but look like the sort of monsters you wouldn't mind as pets."

But, if you're wondering whether Sam's doodles persuaded him to give the game a go, think again. "I don't know if I'm any more likely to play Pokemon Go now that I've butchered their likenesses," he said. "I put off downloading the app for a long time because there are gyms in it and I thought there might be the risk of some kind of exercise involved, but I did finally try it out a few weeks ago. I was walking the dog with my girlfriend, and at one point I must have been trying to capture something difficult because when I looked up, my dog was bored and my girlfriend was peeved. I don't think I'll get past level 4 if I want to maintain a happy home."
