Riverdale's Lili Reinhart: Betty Will Be Pitted Against Her Parents This Season

During a recent visit to the set of Riverdale, The CW's new Archie Comics adaptation premiering tonight, series star Lili Reinhart told ComicBook.com that while Betty Cooper might not have the kicking-down-doors courage of her friend Veronica Lodge, her strength will be on display this season.

In part, because she will be facing off against her own frigid, controlling mother over the question of just what happened to Betty's sister Polly.

"Betty is strong in her own sense, and you see that throughout the season when she fights against her parents to find out what happened to her sister," Reinhart said. "She's maybe not as confident and as bold and blunt as Veronica, but she's strong in the sense that she'll do anything for her sister specifically. She's just a really good friend, but mainly you see how strong she is when it comes to Polly and finding Polly and finding out what happened to Polly and what went down between Polly and Jason. Family means everything to her."

Tonight's pilot for Riverdale reveals that Betty's sister Polly has been institutionalized after a traumatic breakup with Jason Blossom, the boy whose death kicked off the mystery at Riverdale's heart. In interviews leading up to the premiere, Reinhart and producers have hinted that there may be more to that story than meets the eye.

Riverdale stars KJ Apa as Archie, Cole Sprouse as Jughead, Lili Reinhart as Betty Cooper, Camilla Mendes as Veronica Lodge, and Luke Perry as Archie's father Fred Andrews, among others. The series' showrunner is Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, Archie Entertainment's Chief Creative Officer and the writer of Afterlife With Archie, the publisher's wildly popular zombie series.
