Aquaman's Patrick Wilson Steps Up to Defend The Film's Villains On Twitter

It looks like the grunts who square off with Aquaman and Mera in James Wan's forthcoming Aquaman film aren't going to be the typical, anonymous CGI mooks seen in most recent superhero movies.

That's according to a tweet from Watchmen and Hard Candy actor Patrick Wilson, who will play Ocean Master in the forthcoming DC adaptation from The Conjuring filmmaker.

He seems to be implying, in response to a common criticism leveled at superhero and other big tentpole fantasy films, that the Aquaman villains will be more than that -- and while he could just be defending his own character, it's just as likely he's speaking for the larger world of Orm's cannon fodder, too.

The Rebirth Aquaman story currently taking place in the comics has introduced radical Atlantean separatists who would make ideal grunts in this respect. Disposable and plentiful, but still individuals who have personalities, so they'll be less like Chitauri or Parademons, and more like Die Hard baddies.

Aquaman will center on Aquaman as a reluctant ruler of the underwater kingdom of Atlantis who is caught between land dwellers that are always polluting the globe and his own people who are ready to invade the surface. Jason Momoa will play Aquaman. Also starring is Nicole Kidman as Atlanna, Amber Heard as Mera, Willem Dafoe as Nuidis Vulko, Patrick Wilson as Orm/Ocean Master, Temuera Morrison as Thomas Curry, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta.

James Wan will direct Aquaman from a screenplay written by Will Beall, based on a treatment by Wan and DC Entertainment President Geoff Johns. Albert Cho is 1st AD. Producers are Jon Berg, Geoff Johns, Peter Safran, Deborah Snyder, and Zack Snyder. Rob Cowan will serve as executive producer.
