Arrow: Katie Cassidy On Passing The Black Canary Mantle

Katie Cassidy has made an indelible impact on The CW's DC Universe over the course of the last five years.

After debuting as Assistant D.A. Laurel Lance on Arrow, the character since became the crime fighting vigilante known as Black Canary until her unfortunate demise. Then she debuted as the villainous Earth 2 counterpart Black Siren in the second season of the Flash.

Black Siren has since made her way to the main version of Star City, with Cassidy slated to become a regular cast member of Arrow when the show returns for Season 6. It will be an interesting change of pace for the actor especially with Juliana Harkavy joining the show as Dinah Drake, the new Black Canary.

At the Arrow spotlight panel during Heroes & Villain Fan Fest in London, Cassidy spoke about the Black Canary mantle, having received it from Lance's sister Sara (Caity Lotz) and passing it on to Dinah (Harkavy).

"Well, I have to say … I'm very supportive especially, you know, of strong women, and Laurel said she wanted the Black Canary to live on, to pass the mantle, to pass it on," Cassidy said. "And I full support that. I think we live in a world now where women are becoming stronger and I think that Laurel would be very supportive of that. And for me personally as well."

Cassidy spoke about working with Harkavy, whom she shared scenes with in the finale.

"I think that's awesome, another girl that gets to kick ass is amazing. And Juliana [Harkavy] is so sweet and so kind. And she's such a hard worker and she's such an amazing person that, I haven't obviously spent as much time with her but in the short amount of time I did spend with her, I was more than happy that she gets to sort of fulfill those shoes."

She didn't give any hints about how the characters might interact in the future, however.

"And who knows where it goes on? I have no idea," Cassidy added, jokingly saying that she doesn't write the show. "I think it's a beautiful thing, I think it's great."

Arrow Season 6 will return to The CW this fall.
