Batgirl Director Joss Whedon Reveals How The Project Came About

The best ideas often come when you least expect it, and it turns out that Joss Whedon's Batgirl project came about in similar fashion. DC announced the project to much fanfare and added to an already packed slate of films for their cinematic universe, which includes films like The Batman, Aquaman, The Flash, Cyborg, Gotham City Sirens, and now a Nightwing project.

Whedon attended the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 premiere, where he told EW how Batgirl actually happened. "We weren't even talking about Batgirl -- it came up as part of another conversation and then we all got so excited that the movie suddenly appeared. So that's a really good sign to me. It wasn't a slot they were trying to fill. We all just started talking about her and then I couldn't stop. So, that's a good feeling."

Whedon has a reputation for writing strong female characters, and many were disappointed that his version of Wonder Woman never made it to the big screen. The fact that he's so excited about Batgirl is a good sign, saying "There's so many things to say about her. I'm very excited to see a girl in the cowl." For now, no names are attached, but that isn't really where his focus is at the moment, saying "No, I don't have my eye on anybody. I'm creating this character. I'm in a dialogue with her. We'll see who joins that later on."

In Justice League, fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman's selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.

Justice League is directed by Zack Snyder, from a screenplay by Chris Terrio, and features an ensemble cast that includes Ben Affleck (Batman), Henry Cavill (Superman), Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman), Ezra Miller (The Flash), Jason Momoa (Aquaman), Ray Fisher (Cyborg), Ciarán Hinds (Steppenwolf), Amy Adams (Lois Lane), Diane Lane (Martha Kent), Jeremy Irons (Alfred Pennyworth), J.K. Simmons (Commissioner Gordon), Amber Heard (Mera), Kiersey Clemons (Iris West) and Jesse Eisenberg (Lex Luthor).

DC and Warner Bros. have a full slate ahead, with Teen Titans: The Judas Contract coming first on April 4, 2017. After that it's time for Wonder Woman on June 2, 2017, followed by Justice League on November 17, 2017. The Batman is expected sometime in 2018, with The Flash debuting on March 23, 2018. Aquaman is set for October 5, 2018, and Nightwing's solo feature is due sometime in 2019.
