DC Comics & IDW Publishing Are Releasing A Comic To Benefit Orlando Victims

Damon Lindelof, Patton Oswalt, Phil Jimenez, and Olivier Coipel are among the creators coming together to produce Love is Love, a 144-page anthology comic being co-produced by DC and IDW Publishing.

The book, which was spearheaded by The Death of Hawkman writer Marc Andreyko, will see its proceeds go to help victims of the Pulse Nightclub mass shooting in Orlando, Florida.

The anthology is made up of over 100 one- to two-page stories by a wide variety of writers and artists, coordinated by Andreyko, who has a long work history with both DC (where he wrote his critically-acclaimed Manhunter) and IDW (where he did numerous True Blood miniseries).

"I'm a child of the 80s; I grew up with 'We Are the World' and Live Aid," Andreyko told the New York Times. "Events like this shouldn't be compartmentalized," he said. "They should hurt and we should want to change for the better."

The Times reports that proceeds will benefit Equality Florida and its fund for those affected by the June 12 attack. Love is Love will cost $9.99.

This sort of project is not unprecedented -- numerous publishers, including Marvel, DC, and Top Shelf either published or contributed to anthologies and pinup books released to benefit the victims of the September 11, 2001, terror attacks. To have an individual creator wrangling them is somewhat more rare.

Andreyko said that he specifically sought out one- and two-page stories so that he could get contributors to participate. A similar approach is rumored to be happening with another not-for-profit anthology comic: a Tellos original graphic novel from writer Todd Dezago paying tribute to his co-creator, the late Mike Wieringo.
