Drew Powell Talks About Getting "Killed" In Gotham Finale Scene

It's not often that a recurring character, who is popular with the fans, is shot in the head on a TV series and that's the second-most interesting thing that happens to the character in the same episode -- but that's exactly what happened to Gotham's Butch Gilzean during last month's season finale, when after being shot he was revealed to be Cyrus Gold, the undead supervillain known to comic book fans (and Arrow viewers) as Solomon Grundy.
It came as a shock to audiences -- and actor Drew Powell, who has played Butch since the Gotham pilot, was hardly unaffected himself.
"It's funny how those things usually work," Powell told ComicBook.com during a recent appearance at Heroes & Villains Fan Fest in Nashville. "It was my last day — I think the last day of filming for the season. We were running late, it was cloudy and rainy, and Erin, who plays Barbara, and I had to get this thing done in a hurry before the light was gone, so everything conspired to make it like we had to get it right away. What's amazing is what they can do with the graphics; that was all CGI, I just had to pretend I got shot in the head, and any kid who's played cops and robbers has done that. It was a poignant moment because I realized in that moment, this could be the end of Butch. Whatever comes after, Butch as we know him will be altered and I've really grown to like that guy."
Most fans likely think they know just where it's going to go next season -- but whether or not that's true, it seems like even Powell expects a major status quo change going forward for Butch/Cyrus.
