Guy Ritchie Wants To Tackle Suicide Squad 2

Last year, the world got its first taste of supervillain mayhem when Warner Bros. put Suicide Squad to task. The live-action film may have received mixed reviews from critics and fans, but DC Entertainment isn't ready to let the franchise go just yet. Will Smith and Margot Robbie shined thanks to their witty roles, leaving fans interested enough to make Warner Bros. green-light a Suicide Squad sequel. Since January, various directors have been attached to the movie's shortlist, but it looks like there is one man who wishes his name could be on there too.

It's such a shame that Guy Ritchie is so busy these days. Poor guy.

Recently, the director spoke with Variety to promote his most recent film King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. It was there the director reiterated his interested in Suicide Squad 2, saying he thinks he's a great fit for the film.

"I quite fancy doing Suicide Squad 2 because I felt like I could do a good job with it," he said. "I can't do it because I'm doing something else...but I felt like I could really do something with that."

Of course, Ritchie's prior commitment isn't one for moviegoers to shrug off. The director will be overseeing Disney's live-action take on Aladdin. Ritchie has been working with John August to tweak the script, and the director may still get to work with a Suicide Squad star thanks to the film. Recently, new reports suggested that Will Smith was in the running to play Genie, a character first made famous by the late Robin Williams.

It is clear that Ritchie wishes he could join in on the DC Extended Universe, but his hopes for Suicide Squad 2 weren't meant to be. The director went on to tell Variety he'd be interested in working on the sequel since he is a so-called yes man.

"I'm a guy that likes to work, so I'm gonna work, and I'll work with whatever I can to make it work. I am not an absolutlist about what a genre is, so I'm not a no man, I'm a yes man when it comes to making something manifest. That said, I just want it to be interesting. I want it to feel fresh, I want it to feel interesting and I want it to feel something that is worth me taking my $15 dollars to the cinema and going "that was worth it" That's it."

When Ritchie has been asked about taking on Suicide Squad 3 if such a film gets ordered, the director seemed interested. "Has someone gotten to it? No, but I really felt like I could do something with that," he chimed in.

So, for now, it looks like Suicide Squad 2 will be forced to remain director-less for a bit longer. The film's shortlist is still said to include talent like Mel Gibson, Ruben Fleischer, Jonathan Levine, and even Jaume-Collet Serra.

Assemble a team of the world's most dangerous, incarcerated Super Villains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government's disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity. U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren't picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it's every man for himself?
