Jai Courtney Took Mushrooms And Burned Himself For Suicide Squad

The cast of Suicide Squad has been serving up some of the most interesting stories from the set and production. We knew Jared Leto dove into his Joker role pretty viscerally, sending dead animals and used condoms to his co-stars in an effort to stay in character. Now, Jai Courtney is revealing the insane lengths to which he went to pull of Captain Boomerang.
While preparing for the role, Courtney hopped on a Skype call with Squad's director David Ayer. "That night I happened to eat some mushrooms," Courtney says, "and I did self-inflict some burns."
The actor put out lit cigarettes on his arm.
"I turned up to discuss my look, expecting we'd have a long discussion and slowly he refine it," says Courtney. "David [Ayer] just walked right in, picked up some clippers and started shearing chunks of hair off my head. Eventually he said, 'You look like bad news.' Then he left."
Ayer has a reputation for pushing his actors in methodical ways. When he directed Fury, Shia LaBeouf pulled out his own teeth and chose not to shower for a couple of months to immerse himself in the pain and grit felt by his character who was trapped in a tank.
Suicide Squad hits theaters August 5.
