Kevin Smith Has Already Asked To Be Part of Next Year's CW/DC Crossover

After years of claiming that his skillset wasn't up to the task of directing live-action superheroes, indie filmmaker and geek icon Kevin Smith finally got a chance to try to prove himself wrong last year when he took on his first episode of The Flash on The CW.

Set primarily inside the Speed Force, the episode wasn't particularly effects-heavy, and so Smith said at the time that the "talky" episode suited his skills as a director, which were dialogue- and character-heavy scenes.

This season, Smith took on a more action-oriented episode of The Flash, as well as his first (and soon, his second) episode of Supergirl. The latter, of course, is even more effects-heavy.

"She breathes in that suit and it's an effect," Smith joked about Melissa Benoist's Supergirl.

As the scope and scale of Smith's work in the Arrowverse keeps expanding, everyone has the same question: would he be willing to take on an episode of next year's massive four-show crossover event, if he were asked?

"If they ask me?" Smith laughed when we put the question to him yesterday. "I put in my request to [executive producer Andrew] Kreisberg already, dude. After I watched their crossover, I said, 'Please, dude, please, next year, just give me a taste of that crossover. I just want to be involved in one of them. I don't care which one.' They look like a nightmare to shoot, I'll be honest with you. I did the 'Killer Frost' episode [of The Flash] right before they went into the crossovers, and the crossover schedule, you're talking about four different shows where you're swapping performers and characters and stuff like that. It's a nightmare on all the AD's, as they have to try to figure out how to make this all work. That being said, look at the end results, dude. That was absolutely thrilling to watch all four of those shows cross over....I'm asking, I'm asking. I don't know if they'll let me but believe me, I've already put in the request. I said, 'Whatever it is next season, whatever the crossover is, even if it was The Death of Kevin Smith, I want to be involved somehow.'"

Smith said that this year's crossover, which brought Supergirl to The CW's Earth-1 and took place over three nights on The Flash, Arrow, and DC's Legends of Tomorrow, particularly appealed to the comic book fan in him.

"To watch even the slight variation of the opening credit as they overlaid all the logos of stuff," Smith said, was exciting. "It was so close to the comic book experience of reading an annual. I read it back when it was first published, so watching their approximation of Invasion! and then having to tune into the next show and the next show to keep going was absolutely thrilling."

It looks like the ball is in the producers' court on this one...!
