Legends of Tomorrow Casts Spartacus Alum Simon Merrells as Julius Caesar

The heroes and villains of Legends of Tomorrow will travel all across time once again in their upcoming third season. And now it appears that they will meet an iconic Roman figure along the way.

It was recently revealed that Simon Merrells (Spartacus, Dominion) has been cast as Julius Caesar in an upcoming episode of the show's third season. Caesar, of course, had a hand in the rise of the Roman Empire, before he was assassinated by members of his own senate.

"We start out in 2017, obviously, but we're going to take a trip back to Ancient Rome." executive producer Phil Klemmer revealed to CBR. "We're going to have Simon Merrells — he played Julius Caesar's [patron Crassus] on Spartacus — who's going to be playing Julius Caesar on our show."

Merrells' previous roles have placed him alongside many cast members of The CW's DC Comics shows. Merrells is only the latest Spartacus alum to join the Arrowverse of shows, following Arrow's Manu Bennett, Katrina Law, and Nick Tarabay, and The Flash's Todd Lasance and Liam McIntyre. The actor also appeared on The CW's The Tomorrow People, alongside The Flash's Robbie Amell and Peyton List.

It's unclear which episode of the season Merrells will appear in, and how it will factor into the show's larger plot. Seeing as the ruler was assassinated at the age of 55, there is a chance that the 52-year-old Merrells could be portraying the character at that point in his life. How the Legends have a hand with that - especially in the ananchronism-filled timeline of season three - will certainly be interesting to see unfold.

The series returns to Tuesday nights at 9 p.m., following new episodes of The Flash, in October.

Once reunited, the Legends will challenge the Time Bureau's authority over the timeline and insist that however messy their methods may be, some problems are beyond the Bureau's capabilities. Some problems can only be fixed by Legends.

Supergirl premieres on Monday, October 9th at 8 pm, while The Flash debuts on Tuesday, October 10 at 8 pm. Legends of Tomorrow moves to Tuesdays this Fall, airing right after The Flash on October 10. On Thursday, October 12 at 9 pm Arrow will premiere to round out the DC roster.
