Legends Of Tomorrow's Arthur Darvill Wants To Play Young Dumbledore

Arthur Darvill has had a rather interesting career. The actor got his big break on BBC's Doctor Who as the lovable companion Rory before he moved onto The CW's Legends of Tomorrow. The actor has also held several stage roles in musicals like Once and Fantastic Mr. Fox. And, now, it seems like Darvill is wanting to add Harry Potter to his ever-growing resume.
In a recent interview with Digital Spy, Darvill spoke about the famous British series and said he'd be interested in playing a young Albus Dumbledore in the Fantastic Beasts franchise. "Absolutely, [I'm up for it]. D'you know what? I've made this pact with myself that when I hit a certain age, I'm only going to play wizards. I want to be that guy," he said.
"So whether it's 10 years down the line or... when I can grow a salt and pepper beard, I would be totally happy just playing wizards for the rest of my life," Darvill continued. "But yeah, if they came knocking saying, 'We really want you to play the young Dumbledore', I'd definitely consider it!"
Obviously, there are plenty of fans who would love to see Darvill take on the role. The actor has proved he can play characters with whimsical, even otherworldly charm, but Darvill's age is working against him for this role. The actor is only 34 years old, and he can easily play younger if asked. In Fantastic Beasts, Dumbledore will be about 45 years old, and it will be difficult to age down the character because of Grindelwald's current casting.
If you have seen the first Fantastic Beasts, then you have already seen Grindelwald in real-life. The iconic dark wizard is being played by Johnny Depp, and the older actor convincingly places Grindelwald at about 43 years old. While movie magic could certainly age-up Darville, it seems unlikely that the actor would be requested to go wand-to-wand with Grindelwald.
But, hey - the actor has gone against the Doctor and lived as a Time Master himself. He definitely has a thing for playing powerful characters, and Dumbledore certainly ranks up there.
Currently, there is no word on who will be playing Dumbledore in the new spin-off series. Author JK Rowling has said she has an actor in mind to play the wizard, but she has yet to commented further on the casting process. Since Fantastic Beasts has been spread out into five movies, fans will surely be seeing a lot of the character in the coming years, so maybe Darville should clear his schedule if he wants a shot at Dumbledore's beard.
