Major Green Lantern Character Dies

Hal Jordan is one of the most storied Green Lanterns in DC's history for a variety of reasons and has managed to accomplish a great deal despite his mere "earthling" status, including creating a Green Lantern ring from his own pure will. Still, a Lantern can only do so much against death itself.

In the newest issue of Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps, Hal wakes up in a very foreign place, but he isn't alone.

Spoilers from here on out, so you've been warned.

At the end of the "Sinestro's Law" arc, Jordan brought an end to Sinestro's control over the galaxy with his vaunted fear engine, but he had to give his all to do it, which meant giving over everything he had to the power of will. The ensuing explosion took both Jordan and Sinestro with it, and also managed to destroy the fear engine.

Hal had not been seen up to this point, but his ring has been traveling the galaxy looking for its owner. Last issue it ended up on the planet Nok, where the guardians Ganthet and Sayd have been living since the fall of OA.

As for Jordan himself, he calls out to see if someone's there. A faded figure approaches him, asking him how he got here. When Jordan tells him what happened, the presence says "You are in the Emerald Space, Hal Jordan, and you already know me, though we met only briefly, and it was long ago."

It turns out to be Abin Sur, the one who passed on his ring to Hal Jordan the night of his death. He explains that the "Emerald Space is the everlasting reward for those who sacrificed all in service of the corp", but he also says that Hal "does not belong here". A noteworthy aspect of this is that he doesn't' say "yet", just that he doesn't belong here. Could be nothing, but you never know right?
