'Nightwing' Movie Will Feature Nods To Dick Grayson's Past

In many ways, Nightwing is a mirror of Batman's early life, and longtime DC fans can expect plenty of that to make its way into the character's new solo movie.

Dick Grayson is one of the most endearing legacy characters in the DC Universe for a reason, and much of that is due to just how perseverant Nightwing has proven to be. His tragic origins mimic that of Batman's, trading in a lonely Gotham street for the tent of Haley's Circus. So, will the Chris McKay helmed Nightwing movie have any references to that iconic location?

"Yes. In some form," McKay told CinemaBlend. "There will be lots of nods. Lots of nods."

The Nightwing project is rather mysterious at the moment, though McKay has teased it as a "badass action movie". It is good to know though that some of the classic portions of his past, including Haley's Circus, will surface in some form. A nod can be anything of course, from a poster in the background to an actual recreation of the Circus that Grayson lost his parents to, but the fact that it will be referenced at all is certainly a boon for fans.

A young Dick Grayson lost his acrobat parents much too soon, something Bruce Wayne of course related to. Since then the character has undergone more than his share of trials, but he just keeps on moving forward.

"He's a fascinating guy to me because he had all the same things happen to him," McKay told the Shanlian Batman Podcast. "He's got some of the same negatives as Bruce Wayne and then from a society standpoint - obviously, he was adopted into Bruce Wayne's life - but he didn't start that way. He's this guy who has all these negatives and then even more negatives and yet he remains. Those are things why I like Dick Grayson, why I like the idea of Nightwing as a movie."

Nightwing currently enjoys a 3.58 out of 5 on ComicBook.com's anticipation rankings, which you can vote on here.

Nightwing is currently slated to release in theaters on February 1, 2019.
