Power Rangers Justice League #1 Review - Morphin Power Meets The Dark Knight

01/11/2017 05:42 pm EST

Fans are getting some very unlikely crossovers these days, and the latest one from DC Comics and BOOM! Studios is no exception, as the Justice League meets up with the Power Rangers in a new mini-series.

Spoilers from here on out, so you've been warned.

The significance of what's at stake immediately grabs you, as you learn within the first few panels that Angel Grove has been obliterated, with Superman telling Zack that it's not his fault. It goes a long way in getting the reader to invest in the storyline, as most fans are probably approaching this as little more than pure fan service.

The good news is that there are things to like here for fans of both franchises. Ranger fans are rewarded with some nice banter between the team members as well as the appearance of a long-standing favorite villain. The art is similar in tone and style to BOOM's current ongoing series, and there's plenty of action packed fight scenes to keep your attention.

For DC fans, it's always fun to see how Batman approaches a new threat, even one in this case that isn't really a threat, but he doesn't happen to be aware of that at the moment. Once other leaguers get involved the pace quickens, and the final panel is certainly one that you'll get a kick out of.

The biggest problem with the issue is that it is incredibly formulaic. You know how this goes. Circumstances lead to two sets of heroes colliding, the two misunderstand each other's intentions so they fight until they figure out they're on the same team and then they team up to fight the real enemy. It's understandably hard to get around that formula when bringing two very different franchises together for a one-off event mind you, but it doesn't change the fact that plot-wise there isn't really anything new of note.

The narrative might change things up in future issues, but for now, the predictability of the story is what drags it down. Still, the book is fun and aware of itself, and if you're a fan of either franchise you'll still get a kick out of it.
