Suicide Squad Receives an Oscar Nomination

The nominees for the 89th Academy Awards have been announced, and DC Films and Warner Bros. scored a win after a bumpy year, by having its villain teamup film Suicide Squad earn an Oscar Nomination for Best Makeup and Hair.

...That's right, fans and haters alike: you now have to refer to director David Ayer's film as "Oscar Nominee: Suicide Squad!"

Marvel wasn't left out of the running, with Doctor Strange earning a nomination for Visual Effects. However, Doctor Strange and Marvel's other 2016 release, Captain America: Civil War both received critical acclaim and suitable box office returns - DC's Films' releases (Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad) both struggled to climb to financial success, and utterly split viewers into decisive love/hate camps. That makes Suicide Squad's Oscar nomination even more special for those who have supported the film through its turbulent run.

It's ironic to see this bump for Suicide Squad, just days after both it and Batman v Superman made the 2017 Razzie Awards list for worst movies - and after Squad director David Ayer publicly stated that the movie was not as good as it could've been.

Assemble a team of the world's most dangerous, incarcerated Super Villains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government's disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity. U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren't picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it's every man for himself?
