Suicide Squad Wins Third Weekend In A Row At Box Office

Warner Bros. and DC Films' Suicide Squad has been crowned king the box office for the third weekend in a row.

Suicide Squad brought in $20.7 million in its third weekend in theaters. That's a 52 percent drop from last weekend, which rivals the 54.5 percent drop Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice suffered in its third weekend. These weekend-to-weekend drops will likely feed the narrative that the movies of the DC Extended Universe can't sustain at the box office, particularly after Suicide Squad's significant second-weekend decline. Suicide Squad's overall domestic box office total is expected to come to about $262 million by the time Sunday's sales are tallied up.

Other superhero movies have also suffered second-to-third weekend drops of more than 50 percent, including 2016's Captain America: Civil War and X-Men: Apocalypse, and 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron and Fantastic Four. However, most of those films didn't suffer first to second-weekend drops as steep as the one Suicide Squad suffered.

Suicide Squad opened to record-breaking numbers, becoming the largest Thursday night showing in August and the biggest August opening weekend of all time. Currently, the film is the third highest grossing film in August ever and seems likely to top The Sixth Sense ($293 million) when the final numbers are tallied. However, it is unlikely to be able to top current August champion Guardians of the Galaxy ($333 million).

U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren't picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it's every man for himself?

Suicide Squad is written and directed by David Ayer and stars Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Jay Hernandez, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ike Barinholtz, Karen Fukuhara, Scott Eastwood and Cara Delevingne.

Suicide Squad is now playing in theaters.
