Supergirl: Could Alura Still Be Alive In Season 3?

Supergirl is set to return with a bang when season three premieres this fall. When it does, it will officially bring Smallville alum Erica Durance into the cast, with the actress taking over the role of Alura Zor-El, Kara Danvers/Supergirl's (Melissa Benoist) birth mother, from Laura Benanti.
But with the fan-favorite actress joining the fold, some have begun to wonder what Durance's role in Supergirl's third season will be. While Alura was mainly confined to flashbacks, dream sequences, and holographic projections in the show's previous outings - could she actually be revealed to still be alive in season three?
"Shrouded in mystery, those questions." Showrunner Jessica Queller joked to Entertainment Weekly.
Co-showrunner Robert Rovner echoed this ambiguous answer, revealed that Alura will have a significance in season three either way.
"We wanted to keep Alura's presence on the show," Rovner explained, "because it really connects Kara to Krypton and her roots and what it meant to see her family and her planet destroyed. It's an emotional grounding that's always important."
According to Queller, that tie to Kara's home world - and to Alura in particular - will have a heavy hand in the season's central themes.
"The theme of this season is 'What does it mean to be human?'" Queller revealed. "Kara is going to be especially grappling with that, and all of the characters are. The loss of her family and Krypton impacts that a lot. The mother-daughter relationship is something we still want to explore in whatever fashion."
Fans will have to see how Alura returns to the fold when Supergirl season three premieres Monday, October 9th, at 8/7c, on The CW.
"Ridding National City of Queen Rhea and her Daxamite army was a major win for Supergirl, but one that came at a significant cost, as Kara was forced to sacrifice her budding relationship with Mon-El. When season three returns with all-new supercharged adventures this fall on The CW, Kara and team will come up against a new threat in the form of DC Worldkiller, Reign."
Based on the DC Comics character, Supergirl AKA Kara Zor-El (Melissa Benoist), decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and become the hero who she was always meant to be on The CW series, Supergirl.
