Barry and Iris [SPOILER] in The Flash: Attack on Central City

Spoilers ahead for The Flash's most recent episode, 'Attack on Central City.'

It appears that one of DCTV's most beloved couples has taken a very big step in their relationship.

At the end of tonight's episode of The Flash, 'Attack on Central City', Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) staged an elaborate dinner for his girlfriend, Iris West (Candice Patton). As Iris marveled at the detail Barry had put into the event, he got down on one knee and proposed to her.

Given the recent course of events on The Flash - with Barry accidentally witnessing Iris' future death at the hands of Savitar - the couple has been discussing their relationship with each other pretty frequently.

Barry and the rest of Team Flash have been on a crusade in the back half of this season to prevent the events leading up to Iris' death. In contrast, Iris has gotten a sort of new lease on life with the news, all while telling Barry that she doesn't want him to lose what makes him a hero while trying to prevent her death.

But, as The Flash has frequently emphasized over the course of its entire run, Iris is and will continue to be a core element of who Barry is, and what makes him the hero that he is. Even when Barry and Iris weren't romantically involved, she was one of the first people to endorse his alter-ego (before she realized Barry was under the mask) and motivate him to become the fixture of Central City that he currently is.

(In an unrelated, but clever Easter Egg, Barry's proposal speech to Iris referenced an interesting part of lore surrounding one of The Flash's showrunner. Barry told Iris the story of how his grandparents got engaged after his grandfather fought in The War of Americas. This fictional war - which was previously mentioned by Hunter Zolomon/Zoom in the show's second season - is actually a reference to Jack and Bobby, a 2002 television series that Greg Berlanti created with Green Arrow writer Brad Meltzer.)

With Barry and Iris now engaged to be married, it's safe to say that Barry's fight against Savitar - and the looming threat of Iris' death - are only going to be further heightened in the show's upcoming episodes.
