'The Flash' EP Says Danny Trejo is Better Than They Could Have Hoped

The legendary Danny Trejo makes his first appearance on the October 31 episode of The Flash as a character called "Breacher." The notion that the Machete star would be appearing on The Flash would be scary enough for some; it might prove even scarier for Cisco as Breacher happens to be the father of Cisco's girlfriend Gypsy.

Speaking to the press earlier this week, the show's producers revealed that Danny Trejo was an early suggestion for the role in the Flash writers' room.

"We were in the writers room and coming up with this character, and somebody said 'oh, you know who would be great for this? Danny Trejo'," Executive Producer Andrew Kreisberg recalled.

"I've discovered through the years [that] a lot of times you don't ask 'cause you're afraid or you just assume people will say no, [but] sometimes it's like you never find out if you don't ask. So we asked, and he said yes. And it's awesome 'cause it's Danny Trejo," Andrew enthused.

"It's one of the most popular shows on TV so I immediately said 'yeah!' It would be dumb to say no. I really enjoyed the whole thing. The show and the cast is unbelievable. It's like a big family up there," Danny Trejo explained.

"It's thrilling," Kreisberg said about the notion of having Danny Trejo on the series. "For us, once the image of it being Danny came into our heads, we couldn't imagine anybody else doing it. It's a tough part because it's really hard to be known for being an action star but also having a sense of humor, and especially with that cast up there, between Tom and Carlos and Grant and Jessica who turned out to be such a bright comedienne, you really need somebody who is going to play tennis up there."

"If Danny had said no, I'm not sure what we would have done," Kreisberg continued.

The finished product, as fans will see tonight, turned out to be "far funnier" than the producers could have imagined. It was also fortuitous that Tom Cavanagh was the director selected for this week's show.

"Having Tom, who is an actor's director, and being so funny himself, took this episode to new levels, not just for Danny's performance but also for Hartley [Sawyer] because it was his first episode," Kreisberg said.

"I like the way that they put both menacing and funny together," Trejo said about the writing of "Elongated Journey Into Night." "The whole thing just sometimes cracked me up, like, 'come on, do it again, Danny. You're not supposed to laugh'," he recalled.

"So it was really a lot of fun, great experience. I love comedy. I think that's what entertainment is, being able to go from this menacing character to make them laugh," Trejo continued.

Might we see Breacher again?

With Jessica Camacho contracted to the NBC series Taken, the show might not be able to use her as much as they'd like, though she is in the season's ninth episode. Beyond that, the Flash writers are working on a Cisco-Breacher story that doesn't involve Gypsy.

"It's the old tropes, it's the classic buddy movie. Friends become enemies become friends and friends become enemies," Andrew Kreisberg teased.

The Flash airs Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
