Wonder Woman Crosses $100 Million In Opening Weekend

Wonder Woman has conquered a major box office milestone, earning more than $100 million in its opening weekend.

Wonder Woman's projecte weekend total, according to Warner Bros., is $100.5 million, though there is still a chance it could push to $101 million by monday. Wonder Woman opened in 4,165 locations, earning $38.8 million on Friday alone (including Thursday night previews).

This total means that director Patty Jenkins is set to break the record for biggest theatrical debut for a film with a female director. The record is currently held by Sam Taylor-Johnson, who directed Fifty Shades of Grey to a debut of $85 million over three days and $93 million when factoring in the Valentine's Day holiday push.

Wonder Woman isn't the only superhero storming the box office this weekend. Captain Underpants debuted in the number two spot at the box office, earning $7.6 million on Friday from 3,434 locations. Captain Underpants is projected to earn $23.5 million over its opening weekend.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, which earned the top spot over the Memorial Day weekend, dropped to the third spot in its second week. The film took in $6.1 million on Friday is looking at a 68% week-to-week drop for a $22 million second weekend at the box office. The film's domestic box office total now stands at $114 million.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 remains in the top five in its fifth week at the box office, clocking in at fourth place. Marvel's latest film earned $2.4 million on Friday and is projected for a three-day total of $9.7 million. That will bring the movie's domestic total to $355.4 million.

Rounding out the top five is Baywatch, which drops from third place to fifth place as it continues to struggle to find an audience. Baywatch earned $2.4 million on Friday and is projected to earn $7.9 million over the weekend, bringing its box office total to $41.1 million.

Convinced that she can stop the threat, Diana leaves her home for the first time. Fighting alongside men in a war to end all wars, she finally discovers her full powers and true destiny.

Wonder Woman is directed by Patty Jenkins, from a screenplay by Allan Heinberg & Geoff Johns, story by Heinberg & Zack Snyder and Jason Fuchs, and stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Connie Nielsen, Robin Wright, Danny Huston, Elena Anaya, Lucy Davis, Saïd Taghmaoui, Ewen Bremner and David Thewlis.

2. Captain Underpants

George Beard and Harold Hutchins are two overly imaginative pranksters who spend hours in a treehouse creating comic books. When their mean principal threatens to separate them into different classes, the mischievous boys accidentally hypnotize him into thinking that he's a ridiculously enthusiastic, incredibly dimwitted superhero named Captain Underpants.

In Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Capt. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is the fifth film in the franchise inspired by the Disney Parks ride and is directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg from a script by Jeff Nathanson, with Jerry Bruckheimer returning as producer. Johnny Depp, Kevin McNally, and Geoffrey Rush reprise their roles as Jack Sparrow, Joshamee Gibbs, and Hector Barbossa, respectively. New Pirates of the Caribbean stars include Javier Bardem as Armando Salazar, Brenton Thwaites as Henry Turner and Kaya Scodelario as Carina Smyth. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales also features the returns of Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley as Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann respectively after they both skipped Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes' aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.

5. Baywatch

Baywatch follows devoted lifeguard Mitch Buchannon (Johnson) as he butts heads with a brash new recruit (Efron). Together, they uncover a local criminal plot that threatens the future of the Bay.

Baywatch directed by Seth Gordon, based on the television series of the same name. The film stars Dwayne Johnson, Zac Efron, Priyanka Chopra, Alexandra Daddario, Kelly Rohrbach, Jon Bass and Ilfenesh Hadera.
