Wonder Woman Gets A New Creative Team

Fans learned yesterday that Wonder Woman writer Greg Rucka and artist Liam Sharp would be leaving the book after issue #25. The pair has been part of an all-star team on Wonder Woman, which also includes artists' Nicola Scott and Bilquis Evily, and their work has delivered a phenomenal return to prominence for the character. Now DC has announced who will be taking the reigns over from the departing team, and both have some previous experience with the DC icon.

Shea Fontana will be taking over for Rucka on writing duties, who currently writes the popular DC Super Hero Girls (via THR). As you know Wonder Woman is a big part of the series, though her version is in the midst of her teen years. "Having worked on DC Super Hero Girls for the last few years, I have a great sense of Wondy, a teenage Wonder Woman in a high school setting, and it's an honor and an adrenaline rush to be writing her now 'all grown up,'" Fontana said in a statement from the publisher. "Many of her core characteristics continue to remain routed in peace, justice and equality, but as an adult she's seen a lot more war and tragedy, and is dealing with her world from a wiser, more experienced point of view."

Fontana will be joined by artist Mirka Andolfo for the first two issues (of a five issue run), who's work you will recognize from DC's Bombshells series. Fontana referenced the chance to work with her as "a delight", saying she "has an incredible visual storytelling talent to create cinematic superhero action sequences while capturing the complexity of the characters' emotions [and] maintaining a clear focus on the evolving relationships between characters."

Rucka's run on the book has been alternating between the past and the present, interweaving themes from both time periods into an overarching storyline. Inheriting that would be difficult for any creator, but Rucka has said he will be setting the table for the next team before he leaves.

In his official statement Rucka said "Writing Diana again has been an amazing experience, on the level of a dream-come-true," Rucka continued. "All any of us who've worked on the book this last year have wanted is to serve her well, to illuminate what we so absolutely believe makes Wonder Woman such a remarkable and unique and timeless and important character. To have had that opportunity is something that I doubted I would ever get again. Most of us don't get a single bite at the apple, let alone two, you know? To get that opportunity at a time when Diana is rising to such (long-overdue) prominence makes that apple all the sweeter. That she's turned 75 during the course of our run is–to ruin the analogy–icing on the cake."

Rucka is leaving the book strictly for schedule and time commitment reasons, and could always return. It hasn't been announced what will happen after this series of five issues, but hopefully, the new duo can hit the ground running and deliver something exciting and fresh. The duo's first issue hits comic shops on July 12, 2017.
