Wonder Woman: Patty Jenkins Confirms She's Directing The Sequel

A Wonder Woman sequel is likely after it's dominating box office performance, but it wasn't in stone that Patty Jenkins would return for the sequel. Thankfully that has now been put to rest.

At a recent Women In Film Q&A, Jenkins explained that an epiphany about Wonder Woman led to her decision to return (via Advocate).

"I had an epiphany about Wonder Woman 2. I was like, you don't have to do this. It doesn't have to be a foregone conclusion that you do Wonder Woman 2. But then as I was falling asleep I had an epiphany. I was like, Wait a minute. You have the greatest character of all time that you love dearly, with a cast that you love sitting at the palm of your hand at this day and age — you can do whatever you want with them — are you crazy? And then I suddenly realized, it's not more, it's another movie. It's its own movie. And it's got to be great."

Jenkins didn't give too many details on her vision for the film but did drop a tease that it could take place more in the modern day than some might believe.

"It's a continuation of the same character, but there's a great, entirely different story to be told. With this character in our...in the world, that's fun, because now she exists, just funny, and also says something profound about the world we're in right now."

That hesitant "in our...in the world" is the most interesting part. The modern day bookended the first film, and some have theorized that the sequel would take place in the past just further on in the timeline.

Regardless of which era Wonder Woman 2 resides in, fans are going to be ecstatic that Jenkins is the one in charge.

The film stars Gal Gadot (Diana Prince/Wonder Woman), Chris Pine (Steve Trevor), Robin Wright (General Antiope), Connie Nielsen (Queen Hippolyta), David Thewlis, Elena Anaya, Lucy Davis (Etta Candy), Danny Huston, Ewen Bremmer, Doutzen Kroes, Samantha Jo (Euboea), Florence Kasumba (Senator Acantha), Said Taghmaoui, Eleanor Matsuura (Epione), Emily Carey (Young Diana), and Lisa Loven Kongsli (Menalippe).

Wonder Woman is in theaters now, followed by Justice League on November 17, 2017; Aquaman on July 27, 2018; Shazam on April 5, 2019; Justice League 2 on June 14, 2019; Cyborg on April 3, 2020; and Green Lantern Corps on July 24, 2020. The Flash, The Batman, Dark Universe and Man of Steel 2 are currently without a release dates.
