Wonder Woman Director On Her Vision For Thor 2 & Exiting The Film

Before Alan Taylor took over Thor: The Dark World, the Marvel sequel was slated to be helmed by the DCEU's newest star. Patty Jenkins was originally tapped to direct the second Thor film, but she chose to exit the project back in 2011 due to creative differences. Since moving on from Thor, Jenkins has been busy with projects like Wonder Woman, but fans have always wondered what sort of vision the director had for Thor 2. Now, Jenkins is speaking out about her involvement with Thor, and she says her take on the movie would have borrowed from a classic Shakespeare tale.

In an interview with Buzzfeed, Jenkins recently admitted her vision for Thor 2 was centered around Romeo & Juliet.

"I pitched them that I wanted to do Romeo and Juliet. I wanted Jane to be stuck on Earth and Thor to be stuck where he is. And Thor to be forbidden to come and save Jane because Earth doesn't matter. And then by coming to save her ... they end up discovering that Malekith is hiding the dark energy inside of Earth because he knows that Odin doesn't care about Earth, and so he's using Odin's disinterest in Earth to trick him," Jenkins revealed.

"And so it was like, I wanted it to be a grand [movie] based on Romeo and Juliet ... a war between the gods and the earthlings, and Thor saves the day and ends up saving Earth."

At some point, Marvel Studios must have been sold on the idea since Jenkins was brought on-board. However, somewhere down the line, conflicts must have arisen which prompted the director to part ways with the film. While Jenkins says she was gutted by the loss at first, the director has since realized losing out on Thor was all for the best.

"I don't think I could have made a good movie out of Thor 2 because I wasn't the right director. And I don't think I would have been in the running for Wonder Woman as a result," Jenkins told Uproxx.

"And that's one of the reasons why I'm glad I didn't do it because I could have made a great Thor if I could have done the story that I was wanting to do. But I don't think I was the right person to make a great Thor out of the story they wanted to do."

Before she was Wonder Woman, she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, when an American pilot crashes on their shores and tells of a massive conflict raging in the outside world, Diana leaves her home, convinced she can stop the threat. Fighting alongside man in a war to end all wars, Diana will discover her full powers…and her true destiny.

Wonder Woman is directed by Patty Jenkins and is written by Allan Heinberg, Geoff Johns, and Zack Snyder. The film stars Gal Gadot (Diana Prince/Wonder Woman), Chris Pine (Steve Trevor), Robin Wright (General Antiope), Connie Nielsen (Queen Hippolyta), David Thewlis, Elena Anaya, Lucy Davis (Etta Candy), Danny Huston, Ewen Bremmer, Doutzen Kroes, Samantha Jo (Euboea), Florence Kasumba (Senator Acantha), Said Taghmaoui, Eleanor Matsuura (Epione), Emily Carey (Young Diana), and Lisa Loven Kongsli (Menalippe).
