Call Of Duty: WWII Takes Inspiration From Overwatch With New Play Of The Game Highlights

In terms of tone, Call of Duty: WWII and Overwatch are about as different as two games can get, but, surprisingly, it seems Activision's gritty new game may take some inspiration from Blizzard's cheery hero shooter. Those playing the Call of Duty: WWII closed beta (which launched this past Thursday) have noticed the game features something very similar to Overwatch's signature "Play of the Game" highlights.

For pretty much as long as Call of Duty multiplayer has existed, matches have simply been capped by a replay of the final kill. Most of the time, that kill wasn't anything particularly remarkable. That changes with Call of Duty: WWII, as the game now ends matches with a replay of a specifically-selected kill or key moment. How are these plays of the game selected? It's hard to say at this point, although Eurogamer reports having "heroic saves," where you kill several opponents who were about to kill a teammate, chosen often. You can check out one of the new replays in the video above at around the 7:25 mark.

Fans on Reddit, even those who would usually turn their nose up at Overwatch, seem to dig the new system. User RunescapeLS had this to say:

"I love this system way more than final kill cam. I feel like it will cut back on trickshotting idiots plaguing search and destroy. On top of that we actually have an entertaining killcam over the boring 'I died and spawned then immediately shot someone' no-style killcams we had before."

Of course, Overwatch wasn't the first game with Play of the Game style replays, but it was the first game to really popularize the feature and do it right. Also, let's not forget, Call of Duty: WWII and Overwatch are made by the same parent company, so it's likely some cross-pollination has happened.

The ongoing PS4 beta for Call of Duty: WWII continues until August 28. A second beta, which will include Xbox One, kicks off on September 1. Call of Duty: WWII launches on PC, Xbox One, and PS4 on November 7, and you can check out WWG's latest coverage of the game, right here.
