Dragon Quest Builders 2 Brings More Blocky Fun To the PS4 And Nintendo Switch

Dragon Quest Summer Festival 2017 is in full swing in Japan, and Square Enix has used the event to announce several new titles and projects, most notably Dragon Quest Builders 2.

The first Dragon Quest Builders was a surprisingly well-received mashup of Minecraft and classic Japanese RPG tropes, and Dragon Quest Builders 2 looks to, well, build on that winning formula. The new game will let you craft bigger stuff, adds four-player multiplayer, and gives players new traversal options, including the ability to swim underwater and handglide. We don't have a full Dragon Quest Builders 2 trailer yet, but you can check out some livestream footage of the game (with very excited Japanese voice overs) at the top of this post.

In terms of storyline, it was hinted the game will take place in the same world as Dragon Quest II. The original Dragon Quest Builders was set in a blocky approximation of the world from the original NES Dragon Quest, and included numerous storyline references to the game. Despite the possible change of location, it looks like Dragon Quest Builders 2 will feature the same silent main character as the last game.

Next year will be a good time to be a DQ fan, as Square Enix has announced Dragon Quest XI, the next full RPG entry in the series, will be coming to North America, and you can bet Dragon Quest Builders 2 will be coming across the Pacific as well (the first game was released here, and sold decently for an American Dragon Quest release).

Dragon Quest Builders 2 is coming for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch. A release date hasn't yet been announced, but it should hit Japan (and hopefully North America) sometime in 2018.
