Nintendo Switch Has An Issue With New Samsung TVs, But A Fix Is On The Way

It seems the Nintendo Switch and newer (2016 and later) Samsung TVs don't get along that well. The issues stem from the TVs, which have a new "feature" that automatically switches the screen to a new HDMI input if it perceives a device has been turned on. Sounds handy, right? Well, the TVs sometimes decide a device that's off or in sleep mode has been powered on, thus randomly jumping to a different HDMI input when you're in the middle of watching a show or playing a different game. Not so handy.

Since the Nintendo Switch spends most of its time in its charging dock connected to HDMI and in sleep mode, it's particularly prone to setting off Samsung TVs. Customers have been complaining on the Samsung forums for months now (the thread is up to 34 pages), with the Nintendo Switch frequently being mentioned. Well, Samsung finally provided The Verge will a statement about the vexing HDMI issues:

"Samsung has been following the comments on our Community Thread and we will be issuing a Firmware update early this summer that will address this behavior and provide the level of convenience that was intended."

Well, there you go. The release date for the firmware update is a little vague, but at least they specified its early summer. Having to put up with this issue until late September might have been a drag. Of course, it would be nice if Nintendo also patched the Switch so it wasn't falsely telling TVs that it had been turned on (apparently it does it to LG TVs too, but since they don't have the automatic HDMI switching, it's less of an issue). I have a feeling we may be waiting longer for the Switch patch.
