These Pokemon Woodblock Prints Are Both Gorgeous and Expensive

The Pokemon Company has released two absolutely stunning prints made from real woodblock carvings. Both prints are homages of classic Japanese art and were made in the ukiyo-e style that dates back to the 17th century. Ukiyo-e prints involve carving a piece of art into a series of wooden boards - one for each color of ink used in the print. When the carvings are complete, handmade paper is pressed with each woodblock until the finished print is complete.

The first piece depicts Vermillion City from the Kanto Region and shows over 20 Pokemon enjoying the city's roads and bays. The print is based off of one of 53 Stations of the Tōkaidō, a series of famous prints made by Utagawa Hiroshige.

The other print is a battle scene on Silence Bridge, showing the beginning of a fight between an awoken Snorlax and Red and his Pikachu. The Silence Bridge print is based off of Yoshitoshi Tsukioka's Gojo Bridge, an Episode from the Life of Yoshitsune, which depicts a clash between two famous samurai.

Both prints feature art drawn by Ariga Hitoshi and took over 17 carvings to make. The Port of Vermillion City's woodblocks were carved by Kitamura and printed by Ichimura. Silence Bridge was carved by Sekioka and printed by Nakayama.

Each print costs $450, largely due to the time and effort that went into creating each individual piece. Only 50 of each print was made, so you'll need to act fast to get one of these amazing and unique pieces of Pokemon memorabilia. You can buy both prints online at the Pokemon Center webpage.
