Super Mario Odyssey New Donk City Tour Shows RC Car Racing, Dance Clubs, And More Oddness

Super Mario Odyssey is bringing a lot of changes to the venerable platforming series, but nothing in the game is quite as surprising or strange as New Donk City. No, not even the T-rex. What's Mario doing interacting with regularly-proportioned humans in a realistically rendered city? There's just something…off about it. Even Shigeru Miyamoto himself was freaked out by New Donk City and its strangely normal inhabitants!

Well, it turns out New Donk City is even more out there than you thought. Kotaku recently released a faux travelogue for the virtual metropolis, and it's filled with all sorts of interesting little tidbits. For instance, it seems New Donk City is actually part of a wider world called the Metro Kingdom. Will you ever venture out of the city? Perhaps a nice visit to the suburbs?

Aside from the usual running and jumping and possessing, er, I mean capturing, citizens with your haunted hat Cappy, New Donk provides a variety of other interesting activities. You can participate in jump rope challenges, race RC cars, hang out in various cafes, go shopping, or sneak into somebody's penthouse pool. Doing something as simple as talking a load off and chatting with a stranger may randomly earn you a Power Moon!

We also get some hints at some story elements, such as they are. It seems New Donk City is under threat from surprisingly menacing Mecha-Wigglers, and Mayor Pauline is looking to organize a music festival. Gather up all the musicians, and Mario can hit the club and bust some slightly embarrassing moves!

It definitely seems like Nintendo is putting more effort into making Super Mario Odyssey's stages feel like living worlds, rather than just platforming challenges. Personally, I can't wait to take my own tour of New Donk City.

Super Mario Odyssey leaps onto Nintendo Switch owners on October 27.
