Agents of SHIELD EP Comments On Potential Inhumans Crossover

Marvel's Agents of SHIELD spent two seasons building up the Inhumans in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, starting with the mystery of Phil Coulson's resurrection via Project TAHITI.

Coulson's discovery of the deceased Kree body being mined by SHIELD for its DNA revealed new reasoning behind the agent's impulsive need to carve alien symbols on whatever surface was in front of him, and the team found their way inside a forgotten temple filled with mysterious crystals.

The show's second and third season dove into the mythology by exploring how the hacker-turned-agent Skye discovered her heritage as an Inhuman, learning her real name (Daisy Johnson), and coming to terms with her morally bankrupt parents. And while it set up that different sects and communities of Inhumans exist all around the world, it seemed like a springboard to a larger universe.

Now that Marvel's The Inhumans is set to premiere in IMAX theaters and on ABC later this year, fans are wondering if the two series might crossover as the Agents of SHIELD could collide with Black Bolt and the Royal Family.

Well, don't expect it anytime soon, according to SHIELD showrunner Jed Whedon.

"Without being able to say anything really about that show, it will have its own world, just as we tried to start our own world," he said to the press. "Whether or not there's a crossover, we will see."

Whedon added that while all the shows and movies are meant to exist in the same universe, they have to be able to stand on their own. But the benefit of the shared universe allows winks and nods to other properties, giving it a cohesive feel.

"Everything is connected, and that's fun to play with. But the point of our show is to be our show, and we want our fans to be rewarded for watching it without having to watch everything else," Whedon said. "But we also want there to be a bigger reward for people who watch all of them, so that they'll start to see that there's lines connecting it. It's more fun for people who are playing the whole game, but if you don't, you'll still have a great rollercoaster ride."

The Inhumans premieres in IMAX theaters September 1, followed by its regular schedule on ABC.

Agents of SHIELD is currently finishing up its fourth season with the Agents of HYDRA storyline, taking place in the alternate reality of the Framework. 

The next episode, "Identity and Change," airs Tuesday at 10pm EST on ABC.

THERE'S NO WAY OUT FOR DAISY AND SIMMONS – As Daisy and Simmons struggle to discover an escape route to the real world, the identity of the Inhuman leader of the Resistance is revealed.

The show stars Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson, Ming-Na Wen as Agent Melinda May, Chloe Bennet as Daisy Johnson, Iain De Caestecker as Agent Leo Fitz, Elizabeth Henstridge as Agent Jemma Simmons, Henry Simmons as Agent Alphonso "Mack" MacKenzie and John Hannah as Holden Radcliffe.

Guest stars include Brett Dalton as Grant Ward, Jason O'Mara as Jeffrey Mace, Frances Gregg as Amy, Jordan Rivera as Hope, Randall J. Bacon as lead Hydra agent, Brandon Walter as person in line, David Landry as Hydra special agent, David Weiss as serious man, and Patrick Cavanaugh as Burrows.

"Identity and Change" was written by George Kitson, directed by Garry A. Brown and will air Tuesday, April 11 at 10:00-11:00 p.m. EDT on The ABC Television Network.
