Agents Of SHIELD EP Comments On Possibility Of Being Canceled

After four seasons, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has built a strong presence in the Marvel Universe despite its trappings.

Sure, it might not have the budget or even the acknowledgement from its bigger siblings churned out by Marvel Studios, but the show manages to put its own unique spin on the movies' events and make it relevant for its audience.

But after four seasons and the divide between Marvel TV and Film growing wider with each release, is the show long for this world?

Producer and showrunner Jed Whedon spoke to EW about the forthcoming season finale and whether or not the team could be facing a series finale. Whedon was pretty upfront and optimistic about Agents of SHIELD's future.

"We are going to make it a thrilling end regardless, but we don't plan on stopping anytime soon," Whedon said.

Despite his statement, the show seems to be gearing up for a classic wrap up.

The final pod has inserted the main cast into an alternate reality, dubbed the Framework, in which each person's biggest regret has been corrected. People who have previously died are now alive once again. And HYDRA, not SHIELD, is in control.

It allows the show to deal with prior themes in a new way, bring back familiar faces, and bring their whole focus full circle. Sure, it could serve as a functional series finale, but Whedon's comments don't seem like that's what they're planning for.

Let's hope word of a renewal comes soon and we get to see our favorite secret agents operate in the shadows of the Marvel Universe for at least another year. We just want to see how they deal with the upcoming Infinity War!

Agents of SHIELD returns on Tuesday, April 4 with an episode called "What If..." airing at 10p EST on ABC.
