Agents Of SHIELD's Clark Gregg Explains How Ghost Rider's Legacy Will Affect The Show

The folks over at Agents of SHIELD have seen quite a few things. From Kree aliens to secret Nazi organizations, the SHIELD cohort has been through a lot and witnessed even more. In Season 4, Agent Coulson and his gang were introduced to even more far-fetched storylines when the supernatural came knocking with vengeance. Ghost Rider made a much-anticipated debut on the show, and his entrance left level-headed heroes like Fitz and Simmons gaping. Now, one of the show's star is explaining how Ghost Rider and his legacy will fundamentally change the hit drama.

In an interview with Collider, Clark Gregg took time to talk about Agents of SHIELD. The actor was asked how Ghost Rider shook up Coulson's world. This is what the star had to say:

"There's a great supercut of all the looks on Coulson's face when he thinks he's seen everything, and then he sees the guy with the flaming skull, and then he sees the Destroyer in Thor, and then he sees the ghost people. I don't think he was prepared for the magical part of this world. You can't do this job and not really keep the focus on what's scientifically provable. There's always something that pushes past it, but Fitz and Simmons usually find a way to explain, on some level, even an expanded version of how science makes sense. I love, so much, that they've created this guy that seemed like the most obvious, terrifying, satanic villain, who turned out to be yet another complex person seeking redemption that ends up helping us."

He continued, explaining, "On a selfish level, it's such a great breath of fresh air, what that character and Gabriel Luna brought to our show. With Season 4, you're like, "Okay, what can we do now?" And then, all of a sudden, you've got one of the coolest things. And I was really nervous about it because that's big time visual effects. To pull it off in a way that feels like there's a person there is really hard, and I didn't know how even Mark Kolpack was going to do that on a weekly TV budget basis. Our whole post-production team really deserve a lot of props for that."

Of course, Ghost Rider is a bit MIA at the moment. In the midseason finale, the occult character disappeared alongside his uncle in order to give the show's impending 'LMD' arc room to breathe, but don't count the character out for good. According to one of the show's co-stars, it looks like Robbie Reyes may make a comeback still.

The Agents of SHIELD midseason premiere episode will be titled "Broken Promises" and start the LMD story arc. Here's the episode synopsis:

"Though Coulson and May are growing closer, Coulson remains unaware of the dark secret May is hiding beneath the surface. Meanwhile, Aida is unrelenting in her search for the Darkhold."

Marvel's Agents of SHIELD stars Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson, Ming-Na Wen as Agent Melinda May, Chloe Bennet as Daisy Johnson, Iain De Caestecker as Agent Leo Fitz, Elizabeth Henstridge as Agent Jemma Simmons, Henry Simmons as Agent Alphonso "Mack" MacKenzie and John Hannah as Holden Radcliffe.

"Broken Promises" was written by Brent Fletcher and directed by Garry A. Brown.
