Ryan Coogler Reveals How Black Panther Is Unique In The MCU

The first movie on Marvel Studios' slate in 2018 looks to be unlike any other superhero movie the production company has released thus far.

After debuting in the events of Captain America: Civil War, the King of Wakanda known as Black Panther will finally get his time to shine with his first feature film more than 50 years after the character first appeared in the pages of Fantastic Four #52.

ComicBook.com spoke with director Ryan Coogler at San Diego Comic-Con, where he revealed how Black Panther is different than the other films that have been released in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Watch the video above to see for yourself!

"Obviously, T'Challa is an African king and there hasn't been many movies made about that in any genre. So when you look at the movies of the Marvel movies… off the bat, that's going to make that very different," Coogler said. "This movie has a lot of different combinations. You're dealing with a guy who's real like Thor, but he's from Earth which changes things. It gives it context and it grounds it in a way. Even though we're dealing with a lot of fantastical elements, fantastical technology, it still kind of grounds it in a way that's very unique."

Coogler added that the movie will take inspiration from current events in culture and politics.

"It also looks at a lot of things that are topical in the climate right now that you might have to stretch to apply in a science fiction film or in a film that's a little more fantastical," Coogler said. "For this, we kind of wear it on the surface, which is really interesting and makes it different."

Despite being a movie called "Black Panther," the film seems to be just as much about Wakanda and its many denizens. We can't wait to see T'Challa's first solo adventure on the big screen.

Black Panther opens in theaters on February 16, 2018.
