Here's Why Deadpool 2 Cast Josh Brolin As Cable Despite His Thanos Tenure

20th Century Fox made the casting news heard around the world earlier this year, when it revealed that Josh Brolin would be portraying Nathan Summers/Cable in Deadpool 2. Many wondered how the actor's other Marvel film role - as the mad titan Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe - would affect his turn as Cable.

But according to David Leitch, who is helming Deadpool 2, both studios essentially agreed that the roles were distinct enough from each other to allow Brolin to play both.

"I think everybody in sort of the Marvel and Fox world considered it, and they take their time and make measured moves." Leitch explained in an interview with CinemaBlend. "But I think everyone thought it was prudent and was okay in terms of the way Thanos is portrayed and Cable is portrayed. They're very different in styles, and in terms of the way they are presented in the movies, obviously."

With Thanos - who will be seen next in Avengers: Infinity War - being an entirely motion-capture performance, and traditionally seen as more serious than the wise-cracking Cable, that reasoning certainly makes sense. And according to Leitch, Brolin is pretty perfect for the role.

"We couldn't have cast a better Cable." Leitch revealed. "We were filming last night and both [Brolin and Deadpool himself, Ryan Reynolds] were on set, and the chemistry is amazing. It's such a fun movie to be on. I'm really grateful."

Deadpool 2 currently has a 4.07 out of 5 ComicBook.com User Anticipation Rating, making it the fifth most anticipated upcoming comic book movie among ComicBook.com readers. Let us know how excited you are for Deadpool 2 by giving it your own anticipation rating below.

David Leitch (John Wick) will direct the sequel, taking over for original Deadpool director Tim Miller.

Ryan Reynolds will return as Wade Wilson, a.k.a. Deadpool, the Merc with a Mouth. For the sequel, he'll be joined by Josh Brolin as Cable. Cable was co-created by Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld and Louise Simonson. He has often been paired with Deadpool as his grim, serious demeanor serves as the perfect foil to Deadpool's crude and zany humor. The duo headlined an ongoing comic book series, Cable & Deadpool, for 50 issues.

Jack Kesy has been cast in an undisclosed villain role, speculated to be Black Tom Cassidy. Shioli Kutsuna has also joined the production in an undisclosed "key" role.

Deadpool 2 opens in theaters on June 1, 2018.
