Deadpool 2 Screenwriters Want to Avoid Sequel Slump

While the Deadpool sequel lost its original director, the talented writers behind FOX's massive hit are still in tow for Deadpool 2. The duo of Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are working with star Ryan Reynolds on crafting a film that will please fans of the original while expanding the cast to include favorites like Cable and Domino.

The two writers spoke to Latino Review Media about trying to avoid the sophomore slump with Deadpool 2, which currently has a 4.22 out of 5 on ComicBook.com's anticipation rankings. "I think we definitely kept our sights on the sequels that have succeeded because there have been sequels like Godfather Part 2 and The Road WarriorAliens," said Reese. Wernick said "I would say Spider-Man 2, X-Men 2 I enjoyed more than the first…so there are definitely examples of sequels that either equal or surpass the first, and that's what we're trying to keep our eye on, because we don't want to be accused of making a sequel that is not nearly as good as the first--there are plenty of examples of those. So it's just about quality control and making sure you don't settle and making sure you strike new ground but also tap into what was successful about the first one. It's a fine line. I hope we can write it. We're doing it both with Zombieland 2 and Deadpool 2 and good Lord willing, maybe even a Life 2. We're not against sequels, as long as there's an interesting, compelling reason to tell more story that does involve more than just dollar signs."

It seems like they've got their work ahead of them, but at least they've got the right inspiration to pull it off. The synopsis for the original Deadpool can be found below.

Based upon Marvel Comics' most unconventional anti-hero, Deadpool tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.

Deadpool is directed by Tim Miller and written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Deadpool stars Ryan Reynolds, Morena Baccarin, Ed Skrein, T.J. Miller, Gina Carano, Leslie Uggams, Brianna Hildebrand and Stefan Kapičić.

Deadpool's Holiday Blu-ray package is now available and retails for $25.99. Deadpool 2 is expected to begin filming next year and is due out January 12, 2018.
