The Deadpool Director Was Horrified When Its Test Footage Leaked

July 2014 was the make-or-break moment for Deadpool. After wasting away in 20th Century Fox's vaults, test footage of the Deadpool movie leaked, and the Internet basically broke over the release. The leak was what ulimately got Tim Miller's movie approved by the studio, but he wasn't always happy about the drop. In fact, the director just admitted he was horrified over the ordeal.

Recently, Miller stopped by Collider to do an interview. It was there the director walked the site through his journey to directing Deadpool, and Miller said the film's leak sickened him.

"This guy Drew Crevello was working on the X-Men movies, and he saw that trailer. He tracked me down and said, 'Hey, maybe you shouldn't be some other director's b*tch. You should be directing your own thing. You haven't directed anything, but I got this small little movie called Deadpool - have you heard of it?'" Miller began, recounting his earlier days in Hollywood.

"We developed it. We did the little test. It just didn't happen. In Hollywood, stuff gets to a point - you get a budget, you get a movie star and everything - then the studio says yes or no. If they say no, then everyone walks away quickly."

But then San Diego Comic Con came around and wound up leaking Deadpool's test footage to the word.

"The leak which happened at Comic Con. I literally got home from Comic Con, put my bags down from getting off the train, and my phone starts blowing up. Like, 'Dude, your s*it's online. Oh my f*cking god!' I was horrified. I felt sick to my stomach. I thought Fox would kill me."

Obviously, Fox did not kill Miller over the leak; The studio instead green-lit the project after overwhelming support for the movie appeared online. To this day, no one has revealed the person who leaked Deadpool's footage, but one star has said he wish he'd done it sooner.

Talking with Yahoo, Ryan Reynolds did not seem too cut up about the footage leak. "I would have [leaked the clip] if I had known it would have caused that!" the actor said.

Jack Kesy has been cast in an undisclosed villain role, speculated to be Black Tom Cassidy. Shioli Kutsuna has also joined the production in an undisclosed "key" role.

Deadpool 2 opens in theaters on June 1, 2018.
